ATT Announces Download Caps

// 1st Apr '11 ATT Announces Download Caps

Tsk Tsk! Hurray!

Google announces they have chosen their inaugural city to roll out "Fiber for Communities" program, which it says will be capable of delivering Internet access more than 100 times faster than the home broadband connections provided by phone and cable companies across the U.S.

Meanwhile in the same breath competing high-speed broadband provider ATT, the folks who had one good idea and f'ed it up, known as U-verse, announces they will put download caps on their customers. DSL subscribers will be limited to 150 Gigs a month and Broadband U-Verse customers will be limited to 250 gigs a month. Gosh I hope none of those people enjoy Netflix streaming movies or have an unlimited Usenet account. Wow if they were connected somehow to the new Google 1G fiber network in Kansas City they could exceed their cap in about 30 minutes. That's OK ATT will let you go over, but it's $10 per 50 gigs.

Not a smart move. Looks pretty bad from this angle as Powerhouse entities like Google and the President of the United States are trying to get everyone on a new more powerful Internet. I tried to find a public link from ATTs Internet/DSL site, but the Terms of Service posted are from 2008 and make no mention of the download restrictions. It's also not mentioned in detail on any of the pages where they try to sign up new customers. There is one asterisk at the bottom stating "Geographic and service restrictions apply to AT&T U-verse services. Residential customers only. Prices, programming, and offers subject to change without notice." yeah especially after you sign that agreement.

If you read the PCMAG link above you know Comcast already did download caps last year. Remember these are the same folks who killed broadband Usenet provisioning and forgot to give you a discounted rate on that basis. People in the EU may not know but Americans pay upwards to $200/month for the VoIP "Internet" phone/Cable TV/High-speed Broadband Internet bundle. Looks like that's not enough $$. Comments below. Oh! and shout out's to Eric Schmidt and the great folks at Google. Way to change the World bro. One word of advice, just don't hand the completed project over to ATT or Comcast, they have already proven what they'd do with it.

This is no April Fool's Joke ...but this is
